The quest for Joburg's best margarita

2015 began with plans of a Dry January. As a concept we like it – until the part with the not drinking. As the month wore on it became achingly apparent that our readers were crying out for a review of the best margaritas in Joburg, and clearly, we were the cunts for the job.

We don't know this guy, but we should.

Mexican Fresh
We went to the Craighall one. To be honest the marg was small, and a bit salty, but I’d still go there anytime for their chimichanga*.

*Also to try the, ahem, “BAR ONE / TV BAR / SNICKERS / TEMPO BURRITO”… gulp… “A delicious Bar One wrapped in a crispy tortilla dusted with cinnamon & sugar and served with ice-cream.”

Vicky Cristina
In the interests of science we tried both the frozen peach and the frozen lime. They were both delicious. And of a pleasing size. Then the barman offered us cinnamon tequila, which we had to try, because journalism. Also delicious. Just go there.

Hello Peach.
Hello Lime.

Jo’anna melt bar
We tried both the frozen lime and the frozen strawberry. Not the biggest on the block, but both very tasty**.

** Also worth a visit for their other cocktails (and their selfless dedication to melting cheese on anything that stays still for long enough). Oh, and because Melville is the new Parkhurst, babes.

Jo'anna lime.

La Vie en Rose
Their litchi and rose frozen margarita was pleasing, but potentially too sweet for a hardened lime fan. Not convinced.

Pink drinks.

Doppio Zero Rosebank
The reigning queen of the margarita, she proves that size really does count. Officially a “sorbet margarita” this baby is made with lemon sorbet and is tasty as fuck. Try your hardest not to have a second one.

And when the bits of strawberry get a touch frozen.. sigh.
